9 EXCELLENT FILMS ABOUT LOVERS REUNITING AFTER A LONG TIME THAT YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY SEE

By Harshit and Ahona

RAINCOAT Streaming on Hoichoi

Raincoat, a spell-binding retelling of O Henry's Gift of the Magi, unfolds in a single room in a rainy afternoon. Two lovers meet after ages, years and grief and social codes scattered in the distance between them. The impact of it explodes the shackles of the room, of the frames - laced with rain, love and yearning.

CERTIFIED COPY

Perhaps it is impossible to pick a favourite from Kiarostami's cinema. But this is it for me. It is the film. that most substantially impacted me, certainly one that I have gone back to. The film never clarifies if the man and woman in it are actually a couple, or if they are just play-acting one. But the expanse of it, its thesis on love and marriage - all of it, is exquisite.

96 Streaming on Prime Video

96 is as much about the regret of lost love as it is about the importance of acceptance of it, of moving on, and of that closure that many of us are never able to find. The film is a hauntingly stunning reminder that not all beautiful things are complete, & not every journey is supposed to find a home.

US AND THEM Streaming on Netflix

This heartbreaking film about unfulfilled love shifts between the past and the present, and does it rather interestingly. The present is shown in B&W while the past is shown in colour, and the awe-inducing reason for that choice becomes clear at one point in the film that appears almost exactly halfway.

CASABLANCA Streaming on Prime Video

In many ways, Casablanca defined the arc of lovers reuniting as a genre in its own rights. It is possible that, like me, you watch the film after you have seen several others with a somewhat similar story, and the novelty of it is affected by that. But Casablanca is almost Shakespearean in its appeal, transcending generations.

KAPURUSH Streaming on YouTube

Very few films approach the resentment that lovers might have for each other with the precision and poetry that Kapurush does. It does not settle for easy resolutions, and discovers the truth of lost love in a fictional story. It is, by far, one of the most inventive works on the epilogue of a relationship.

BLUE JAY Streaming on Netflix

Blue Jay isn't an easy film to sit through. It's almost like watching two old lovers take therapy together to resolve deep rooted issues that they never addressed, issues that ended up affecting the course of their lives. The film takes its own time to reveal its layers, and takes unexpected turns to punch you in the gut & fill you with despair.

IJAAZAT Streaming on YouTube

Both Ijaazat and its original, the Bengali Jatugriha, are portraits of memory not just the memory of loving someone, but the memories of who they were, of how you had structured your life around them. If you have already seen ljaazat, I would highly recommend watching Jatugriha.

BEFORE SUNSET Available to rent on Prime Video

If Before Sunrise represents the melancholy of separation, Before Sunset stands for the hope of reconciliation. It gave us reasons to believe in second chances, to believe that when the person is right, life might find a way back to them. It also serves as a reminder that people change with time, and the very fabric of your love itself may have changed, but you stay for the things that you know would always remain the same.
